From grand old piles to cutting-edge contemporary hotels

Established more than 30 years ago on a strip of land between two hills on a 140-acre peninsula, it can only be reached by boat or helicopter. Book an ocean suite – it’s like having your own private beach as you’re minutes away from the sea. And when you can drag yourselves away from the luxury of your king-size bed and private terrace, there’s the hilltop restaurant where you can eat fabulous meals looking out over the ocean. Tea is served in the Arawak Room every afternoon where you can lounge around until sunset, or, if you really want take it easy, book into Biras Spa for relaxing massages and facials using local aloe and salt as well as Decleor products.

Barbados boasts some beautiful old hotels, but we think the most romantic by far is the intimate Cobblers Cove (www.cobblerscove.com), built in the 1960s and tucked away on the west coast. This enchanting retreat, with its pink exterior and 40 suites, is a member of Relais & Chateaux and feels like a home from home. If you have the money, splash out on the Camelot or Colleton suites, which have four-poster bed, private plunge pool and roof terrace. Dining here is a fantastic experience. You won’t be able to resist the light-as-air chocolate souffl é and blackened mahe mahe fi sh caught fresh that morning by local fi sherman Barker. Another long-established island destination to swoon over is the luxurious Peter Island Resort (www.peterisland.com), which dates back to the 1970s. This private island in the BVI is a superb fi nale to a romantic honeymoon. There are ocean-view rooms or villas set up on the hilltops offering panoramas, plus beachfront junior suites which peek through the coconut palms fringing Deadman’s Beach, one of the Caribbean’s fi nest stretches of sand. There’s an endless list of dreamy things to do here, from sneaking off to fi nd yourselves a deserted spot on one of the island’s six beaches, lazing in hammocks, hiking through mangroves for the perfect sunrise view, snorkelling in crystal-clear water to taking a helicopter tour. Or you can visit The Spa at Peter Island Resort, which boasts 10 indoor and two outdoor treatment rooms, an infi nity pool, beach and garden. The choice of face and body treatments is superb, such as West Indian Honey & Sesame Seed Glow, Tropical Lime & Ginger Buff or Frangipani & Coconut Body Wrap. There are also couples suites where you can both indulge in the fi ve-and-a-half hour Suite Retreat which comprises of a Swiss shower, body scrub, soak, a choice of a wrap or massage, followed by a private lunch.

You can also be driven to the ‘loop’, a vantage point on the island, to catch the sunset as you sip champagne. Something new…
