The new supercar gets V12 hybrid with a top speed of 221 mph.

For schoolboys, it was the poster car of THE poster car, a drool-worthy sexy motor with a body to die for. Today, in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Lamborghini Countach, the supercar is back. It looks set to be as legendary as the model of the 1970s and 1980s – and as rare with just 112 being produced.

The limited edition V12 hybrid has been described as an “interpretation” of the classic original by the Italian car maker with Lamborghini’s screaming V12 still there in pride of place. The only difference, essentially, is the new Countach’s mild-hybrid powertrain technology which connects a 34bhp electric motor to the gearbox, providing extra torque under acceleration to help fill in power gaps.

Energy is stored in a supercacitor, rather than a battery, for more rapid power recovery (under braking) and delivery. With a dry weight of 1,595kg and four-wheel drive, performance is extreme: 0-62mph takes just 2.8 seconds with the characteristic wedge-shaped design enhanced by modern design cues. A number of heritage paint options will be available alongside modern colour choices, and the 20in (front) and 21in (rear) wheels feature the ‘telephone’ style of the Countach from the 1980s, though fitted with modern carbon ceramic brake discs and Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres.

Lamborghini’s distinctive scissor doors remain, of course, and inside the design cues from the original Countach continue – plus some gorgeous modern touches, such as comfort seats and a bespoke 8.4in touchscreen with Apple CarPlay.

And the cost? Not confirmed as yet, though likely to be around EUR 2 million plus taxes. All 112 have been snapped up already, so even now it is too late to join the queue – deliveries are scheduled worldwide from early 2022.
