In the lush hills of Saint David Parish, Grenada, a young boy named Dickon Amiss Thomas Mitchell was born on October 8, 1977. Raised in modest surroundings, Mitchell’s journey from humble beginnings to the highest political office in Grenada is a testament to determination and vision. After earning his Bachelor of Laws from the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill and completing his legal education at Hugh Wooding Law School in 2002, he embarked on a legal career that saw him establish his own firm, Mitchell & Co., in 2017.

Mitchell’s foray into politics was swift and impactful. Elected as the leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in October 2021, he led the party to a significant victory in the June 2022 general elections, securing nine out of fifteen seats in the House of Representatives. This triumph ended the long-standing tenure of the New National Party and marked a new chapter in Grenadian politics.

As Prime Minister, Mitchell has been a proponent of transparency, anti-corruption measures, and institutional reform. He took on additional roles, including Minister of Finance and Minister for Infrastructure and Physical Development, Public Utilities, Civil Aviation, and Transportation.  One of his notable initiatives was the establishment of the Ministry of Mobilization, Implementation, and Transformation, aimed at enhancing governmental efficiency.

Mitchell’s leadership was tested in 2024 when Hurricane Beryl devastated parts of Grenada, including Carriacou and Petite Martinique. In response, his administration became the first to activate a hurricane clause in government bonds, deferring debt payments to allocate funds for disaster relief—a move that garnered international attention.

On the international stage, Mitchell has strengthened ties with global partners. In January 2025, he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, reaffirming Grenada’s commitment to the one-China principle and discussing avenues for enhanced cooperation.

Domestically, Mitchell envisions a republic status for Grenada, aiming to transition from a constitutional monarchy to a republic during his tenure.  He also emphasizes the importance of cultural identity, having led the nation in celebrating its 50th year of independence in 2024 with nationwide events and festivities.

Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell’s tenure reflects a blend of youthful energy and strategic foresight, positioning Grenada on a path toward modernization, resilience, and greater autonomy.
