India and Slovakia Forge Defence, Technology and Trade Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made history by becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to pay an official bilateral visit to Slovakia since the country gained independence in 1993, opening a significant new chapter in relations between the two nations. During high-level talks in Bratislava with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, India and Slovakia agreed to elevate their relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership, signalling closer cooperation across defence, technology, trade, innovation and education.

One of the most important outcomes of the visit was the signing of a Letter of Intent on Defence Cooperation, designed to encourage closer collaboration between the defence industries of both countries. The agreement aims to promote joint development, joint production and the sharing of expertise, reflecting growing strategic trust between India and Slovakia.

Beyond defence, both governments agreed to deepen cooperation in emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, digital innovation, cybersecurity, quantum technologies, research and higher education. Discussions also covered manufacturing, transport, energy, labour mobility and expanding business opportunities between Indian and Slovak companies.

Trade was another major focus of the visit. Leaders from both countries expressed confidence that stronger economic ties, supported by the recently concluded India–EU Free Trade Agreement, could significantly increase investment and commercial exchanges. Both sides also discussed improving connectivity and exploring future direct air links to encourage tourism, business travel and people-to-people contacts.

The discussions extended beyond economics to global affairs. Slovakia reaffirmed its support for India’s aspiration to become a permanent member of a reformed United Nations Security Council, while both governments called for reforms to international institutions to better reflect today’s geopolitical realities.

In a gesture highlighting the importance of the visit, Slovak President Peter Pellegrini awarded Prime Minister Modi the Order of the White Double Cross (First Class), Slovakia’s highest civilian honour, recognising his contribution to strengthening bilateral relations and international cooperation. Modi dedicated the award to the people of India and to the enduring friendship between India and Slovakia.

The visit also showcased the growing cultural ties between the two countries, with meetings involving Slovak business leaders, educational institutions and members of the Indian diaspora. Ceremonial events at Bratislava Castle underlined the warm diplomatic relationship developing between the two nations.

As India continues to expand its partnerships across Europe, the agreements reached in Bratislava are expected to strengthen cooperation in strategic industries, innovation and trade while creating fresh opportunities for businesses and researchers in both countries. The historic visit demonstrates the growing importance of India-Slovakia relations and sets the stage for broader collaboration in the years ahead.
